Railway Museum

In the area of Kordelio and within the area of the railway sorting station there is a wonderful building called "Military Station".

The Italian architect Pietro Arrigoni designed and built this building in 1894 to serve the transportation needs of the Turkish army.

Although it was a simple military installation the building has a symmetrical layout with wooden ties on both sides as well as a beautiful roof.

The purpose was to make the transport of the Turkish military by trains more comfortable. So on a move from Constantinople to Skopje, Monastir, or elsewhere, the soldiers could stay here for a few days, eat a good meal, wash, wash their clothes, etc.

Today, the railway museum operates in this area under the supervision of the Thessaloniki Railway Friends Association (www.sfsth.gr).

In this museum there are exhibits both in the outdoor area and in the covered area (Arrigoni building).

In the outdoor area there are locomotives, passenger and commercial wagons and many other machines from the period of the industrial revolution.

One of the passenger cars was built in 1920 and ran on the Orient Express between Paris and Istanbul.

Among the commercial ones there is a wagon built in 1873 with a guard for a brakeman.

In the covered area there are smaller exhibits such as telegraphs, engine and wagon signals, musical instruments, night lanterns, etc.

The museum is open every working day from 10:00 to 14:00 and accepts both individual visitors and large groups of visitors and especially schools.

Visits usually last about an hour and a half and are always guided. In particular, the guided tours for children also include many games such as the manual draisine, the “tulumba”, the transport plate, etc.

From time to time, in the area of the museum social events and activities take place, such as concerts, photo shoots, book presentations, etc.
